October Glow Out 2014
10/28/2014
Each year the Iron Wolverines team hosts the October Glow Out, a concert event that allows students in our school to showcase their talent. This is always a huge fundraising opportunity for our team and this year was no exception. Our team raised a total of $625.00, and that money will be used toward team apparel and traveling expenses from our SCRIW championship. This year was the most successful Glow Out yet, due to the effort put into the concert by each team member. With twelve different acts that each brought a unique element to the show, there was never a dull moment. There was an incredible display of support from peers and staff, which contributed even more to the success of the show. The Glow Out is so much more than a concert. It is a time to make memories, show off the amount of dedication that our team has, and contribute a portion of our work to the school. It is about showing support for people that we may not even know, simply because we want to encourage them and see them succeed. It is an awesome thing to experience how everyone works together to make something happen, not only for ourselves, but for our school as a whole.
[Eat. Sleep. Create. Repeat.] The past weekend marked not only an important achievement for our team, but the making of history. The Iron Wolverines robotics team competed in SCRIW, the South Carolina Robotics Invitational and Workshop. The workshop, held at Spring Hill High School in Chapin, South Carolina, included teams from twenty-two different schools. Each team had their own successes, failures, and goals, but as the old (somewhat lame) cliche goes, it's all about the amount of fight in the fighter. This is our story.
The team arrived at our school at 5 o'clock in the morning, and were scheduled to leave at 6. However, due to some miscommunication we were not able to leave until 7 o'clock. Finally, we arrived at Spring Hill High School around 8:40, and several members of our team went into the driving area, and those members of our team that would be driving the robot held a meeting to discuss the rules of the competition and ensure that everything was running smoothly with our robot. Each team in the competition had eight trials that would determine their placement. You know how you have those moments when things start to go surprisingly different than how it should have gone? That happened. The pneumatic devices weren't working on our robot, causing an unexpected delay. We had two options. We could go home, seemingly defeated and left to try again next year, or we could keep pressing forward. If we succeeded we would make Woodland history. Nothing in us wanted to go home, and we made up our mind that despite the difficulties we may face throughout the day, we would keep going. Entering into the competition, we were ranked at 16th place. As the time came to draw alliances, we were one of the last teams to be picked; thus, we were one of the last to compete. Despite the previous difficulties that we had faced, this was our time to show people what we could do. As the competition proceeded, we were seemingly unstoppable. No teams were able to score against us, and we came out with a victory of 195-57. Everything that we had worked toward had payed off. We were successful, and that was something that no one could take away from us. We are passionate. We are engaged. We are united. And now, we are victorious. This is our story, and it is the first of many volumes filled with trials, learning, and ultimately success. [Eat. Sleep. Create. Repeat.] Positive Mind, Passionate Heart

As crazy and hectic as our lives may get, we always make sure to find time for the things that we are passionate about. I know for a fact that although this can be extremely complicated, it is absolutely worth it. The same can be said for our Iron Wolverines Robotics team. Between fundraisers, making eminent changes, and learning from mistakes, we have certainly been busy this week. However, we have also made substantial progress. We have already come a long way since the first week of school, which seems to have been ages ago. With competitions creeping up behind us and camps coming up soon, there is plenty going on and countless ways to get involved. This week not only brought lots of changes, but also allowed us to improve our projects and consider ideas that may assist us in future competitions and races. The greatest project that was worked on this week was the small robot. Adjustments were made that would allow the robot to function more conveniently. The pneumatic system was changed, allowing for more power and throttle, as well as more velocity, which are sure to prove handy in races. The material of the shooting artillery was adjusted as well to provide better accuracy. Lastly, the Iron Wolverines website was completed and has finally come together as a unit. This years team is loaded with potential, and we know it. We are fearless, and know that we can do anything that we set our mind to. Never underestimate the power of a positive mind and a passionate heart. This is what we are passionate about, and that's not going to change.

As a part of the Iron Wolverines, one of the most important characteristics is your ability to see countless opportunities. So far this year, it seems that each member has done exactly that. Everyone has come together to accomplish their goals, and the drive to succeed appears to be more visible than before. As a team, we know what we want, and we are more than willing to do whatever it may take to get it. This week, the team made an important, but wise decision, to reconstruct the foundation of the small robot, in order to increase racing capability and most of all, to increase speed. The robot has been tested through various obstacle courses, with the most recent being the Figure-8. Several other members of the team worked on Zero Robotics, and were able to get the sphere into the zone where they needed, and can now move it through the area. Now, they will work on getting it to take photos, in preparation for when they will launch the actual robot in competitions. The Iron Wolverines website is up and running now, as well, and things are beginning to come together quite well. This is a huge year for the group, and we are teeming with success. We are capable of so many things, and with our focus in the right place and the proper mindset, we can accomplish anything that we wish.

We are at it again! As things seem to get busier and even more hectic, we up our game and fiercely work together to meet our goals. In this weeks meetings, the most pressed-upon project was finding a driver for the small robot, which will soon be ready for competition. The team has also come together to finish building and making reparations to the old robot. There are many events coming up soon that the Robotics team is preparing for, such as SCRIW, on October 11th, and BAR camp in November, which are both extremely exciting opportunities for the team. This year, the team plans to send two high-altitude balloons into space, and also seeks to compete in the solar power car race in Texas next summer, with preparations starting as soon as possible. The team will also be starting fundraisers in the upcoming week to raise money for competitions, and a huge part of what we are able to do is due to these fundraisers. While robotics is definitely a great opportunity to learn more about robots and science, it is also a great way to learn more about yourself. It pushes you to give your maximum, while also allowing you to have fun. However, it is also something to be taken seriously. Being a part of this robotics team means taking the focus that you apply to the other aspects of your life and multiplying it tenfold. It requires you to give everything that you can and only pushes you toward success. As a team, we are all in this together, and it is up to us as a whole to step forward and commit to that.
[Eat. Sleep. Create. Repeat.] Full Throttle
9/5/2014
The Iron Wolverines are back at it again! As we bounce back into the school year, we are also moving full throttle into the events and projects that we have planned. In the meetings that were held this past week, the team put its focus on finding a driver for SCRIW (South Carolina Robotics Invitational and Workshop). We tested the robot by running it through an obstacle course, with the first run taking approximately 1.40 seconds. The team checked the cables of the robot after each run, and it was amazing to see how each team member worked together to make sure things ran smoothly. Although we experienced some bumps along the way, such as losing a key which held the gears of the robot together, we rallied and made sure that we accomplished the goals set in place for the week. Other members of the team worked to complete Zero Robotics, which, depending on competition rankings, would allow us to create a robot that would eventually be sent into space to collect data. The team also worked on planning events for the school year, such as the October Glow- Out, among many others. The year and the events that will make it up are beginning to fall into place, and it is up to us to come together as a team and achieve our goals. We can make Woodland history this year; we simply need the motivation and the ambition to do so.
